Jeremiah Quarshie

Jeremiah Quarshie’s paintings explore the boundaries between physical and digital production; considering the construction of imagery, his work investigates the nature of art itself. Through detailed portraiture, emphasising the connectedness between people otherwise divided by social, economic or geographical conditions, Quarshie reveals an acute social awareness. Using people who he has strong personal relationships with as well as ordinary women he scouts for as models, Quarshie documents individuals in actual and invented roles – including beauty queens, businesswomen, and labourers – to demonstrate ideas of hope in personal and imagined situations and against failing systems while often making reference to historical events, ideas and personalities.
